IMPORTANT CHANGE IN SYLLABUS
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
As you have noticed essay # 4 is due on the last day of class and replaces a final exam. In order to demonstrate your critical reading skills, I am going to change the assignment for essay #3 and essay # 4.
Here's how it's going to work:
Essay # 3 and Essay # 4 will be combined into one essay DUE ON THE LAST DAY OF CLASS MONDAY MAY 2ND.
ASSIGNMENT:
I would like you to compare how language is constructed/used in Sleeping with the Dictionary and Ring of Fire. I have emphasized the idea of close reading throughout the semester. Since you are dealing with two whole collections of poetry, it is more useful to think of "specificity" than "close reading."
What do I mean by specificity? Well, don't deal in generalities (i.e. Ring of Fire and Sleeping with the Dictionary are both playful with sound). I want you to describe how both books operate. Remember: move away from the five paragraph essay and construct a narrow thesis to allow for critical thinking. Find points of comparison between the books and give SPECIFIC evidence by using a specific poem (or multiple poems) from each book.
Here are some questions to consider in constructing a thesis
(note: you do not need to answer these questions in your essay. These questions merely suggest areas to explore before you decide on a focus for your essay. In other words, the questions are just to help you get started)
How are the books similiar/different in their structure? How do they construct/use/play with language? What do these books suggest about the construction of language? How do these collections use/incorporate sound and song? How do both collections use repetition? What are the political dimensions of both books? How do these books call attention to themselves as a made thing/book? How are the poems in the book NOT self-contained? What do the titles of these books suggest? How is the language "sensualized" in the books? How are various discourses (languages) used? (for example: jargon/slang, advertising, description, mock confessional etc.)
LENGTH:
Since you are combining essay # 3 and essay # 4, the min page length is 5 pages and the max is 7 pages. As usual, Times New Roman, 12 font, double spaced
DUE DATE:
Monday May 2nd at the BEGINNING of class. I have been far too lenient with late papers. For this paper, I will not accept a late paper. A paper is late if you turn it in more than 10 min after class starts.
GRADES:
Again, since this assignment combines essay # 3 and essay # 4 it is worth 40% of your grade. This percentage more accurately reflects the weight of a final exam.
ADVICE:
Read both Sleeping with the Dictionary and Ring of Fire carefully. Do not wait till the last minute to start thinking about this essay. Read actively. Take notes on the poems or/and in a notebook. It is NOT acceptable to claim you couldn't get a hold of the book. All textbooks were required at the BEGINNING of the semester.
